Hello
and welcome to Femme: the magazine, where we will explore what
it is to be femme. What does it look like, how does it feel, and
how do we think and talk about our lives as femme lesbians. Did
we always accept our femme selves, or was its discovery and expression
an unexpected gift found sometime after we first came out?
I
believe it was Kate Bornstein who said there are as many genders
as there are people. Well, I believe there are as many ways to
be femme as there are femmes. And yet, we are often aware that
there are common threads. At times our similarities are uncanny.
Many of us yearn for the comfort of community, of being one among
sisters, and we may try to see congruence where very little exists.
But the experience and palpable sense of connection does not go
away. We femmes share something powerful.
I
often wonder what exactly shapes our commonality? It isn't anything
purely visual, nor do we all want and like the same things. Some
of us love to fix our cars. Some of us hate to pump our own gas.
We are single mothers. We support ourselves, and our lovers, sometimes,
too. Or perhaps, we are the proverbial stay at home wifely femmes.
We wear nothing but Mac cosmetics, or we look sloppy, even worn
down. You know the drill, we femmes are young, shiny and bright,
and older and wiser, we come in every hue, from every socio-economic
class, and probably every country in the world.
We
are as different from each other as night and day. And yet, the
common thread is undeniable. We'll be exploring this in Femme:
the magazine, too. In our premier issue several femmes talk about
Coming out of the Queer Closet. You'll recognize strong common
story lines in our articles. Each shaped by individual personalities,
geographic location and time period. But the bells ring on key.
These stories come in sweet harmony.
We
hope you enjoy reading Femme: the magazine. We are just getting
started so expect to see improvements over the next few issues.
We'll be looking for more graphics and we know the interactive
experience will continue to mature. Your feedback is a key component
of our quality control. Please feel free to drop me a line at
