The Financial Ties that Constrain Us

By: Ms. MoneyGrrl

(Continued, page 2)

Well, I don't buy that!! I think that when it comes to helping members of our community, the Catholic Church has us beat with their Sunday collections. So, it makes me think about how many times I have dropped $75.00 for a new pair of shoes, or went out to lunch instead of bringing something from home. How many of us have done that? Why can't our community come together, embrace each other for what we are, not what we are not and provide scholarships, or grants to help our fellow brothers become who they feel they are inside. So what can we do as a community? Do we even have a responsibility? And if so, where do we draw the line? Is it our duty to help our fellow neighbor financially? Will it make him a better member of our community? Will it enhance his life, make him better, thus is turn allowing him to give back even more?

I know I don't have the answers, I can't tell you why insurance companies do what they do, other than they are out to make money, why surgeons charge what they charge, other than they are out to make money. But I will say this, if I was a surgeon, I'd do top surgery for free to any one who wanted it, no questions asked. So maybe that's what we need to do, we need to have a network within our community, one that can cross all occupations and bring people in touch with others that can help them. I mean, I would be more that willing to do some financial counseling for folks. I want to give back to this community, and for me, it means everyone, not just those who identify as dyke, or butch, or femme, or queer. If you stand by me and are proud of me, I'll stand by you and be proud of you. Everyone deserves to wake up each morning and look in the mirror and be happy with who they see.
